Meet us where the community rolls

If you’re in the market for a unique, handmade skateboard built for bombing, weaving, or slaloming your way through the city streets, then you’ve found the right place.

Sapient Skateboards was built by a love for skating and a desire to craft high-quality boards for a passionate community.

In fact, it’s that community that inspired Founder Will Stephan to name the business Sapient Skateboards. Because even as the skateboarder embarks on a solo skate, she is drawn into a tight-knit community, and that interdependent relationship between self and society is something that we sapiens have relied upon in every part of our evolution.

Their lesson space was specifically designed with the skater in mind. With various obstacles, all levels of skaters are catered to, giving riders the ability to practice at their pace, while still leaving ample room for progression.

Their goal is to allow skaters to naturally build confidence in their own abilities while also building community with other skaters.

Crafted entirely by hand using hard-maple from the Great Lakes region, Sapien boards range from about $75 for a deck to $185 for a complete setup. It takes five to seven days to make a board and the shop can ship anywhere in the United States for a flat rate of $20.

Will Stephan started skateboarding in high school and quickly learned how to build a board to fit his style. Before long, he was building boards for friends and fellow skaters in his basement.

Stephan started Sapien Skateboards in the basement of his family home in Glen Ellyn before moving to new digs in a warehouse in Bellwood. Though the new production facility has huge windows and a loft-like look, Stephan manages to retain the cozy basement vibe of a business born from swapping stories with the skating community.

The hand-crafted boards are made in a basement shop in Bellwood located at 3100 Randolph Street, but the best way to catch up with the crew at Sapient Skateboards is at a neighborhood skatepark. Their preferred place to roll? Wilson Skate Park in Chicago.
