Meet us where hair care has heart
When an adoptive family embraces an adopted child for the first time, hearts and family units expand.
Later, multiracial and transracial families may face unforeseen difficulties, and Styles 4 Kidz ensures that haircare is no longer one of those challenges.
Offering support and education for both parents and children, Styles 4 Kidz provides the tools and resources that families need to care for textured hair. Foster caretakers and adoptive parents can take online training or in-person haircare workshops in a safe environment where questions about textured hair are welcomed and encouraged.
Children with textured hair can gain confidence at the salon where S4K provides kid-friendly services and haircare education in an environment where kids feel a sense of belonging.
Book workshops for parents and salon services for kids on the Styles 4 Kidz website. Salon services include cornrows, braids, twists, and more.
Two-hour haircare workshops for parents range from $35 to $50. One-on-one consultations are $40. Salon visits range in price depending on the service.
The founder of Styles 4 Kids is Tamekia Swint who had the idea for S4K while on a mission trip to Poland where she taught a braiding class. When a girl receiving new braids commented that she had always dreamed of having her hair that way, Swint started to wonder how many children had the same dream.
Realizing that there was a gap in haircare knowledge and education opportunities for transracial adoptive and foster families, Swint set out to provide compassionate haircare education and services.
She takes pride in connecting kids with their culture and watching their self-esteem grow. The hair education workshops for parents also help to strengthen relationships among families.
By providing a safe space for cross-cultural communication, Styles 4 Kidz is doing so much more than haircare.
Styles 4 Kids, located at 235 Harrison Street in Oak Park, is just a four-minute walk from the Austin Stop on the CTA Blue Line.
