Meet us where soups and subs live long and prosper
Back in 1977, Starship Restaurant opened its doors with a selection of five subs served with a side of fries and a fountain soda. Now the restaurant and catering “enterprise” (we couldn’t resist) serves 11 cold sub sandwiches and more than 120 types of soup.
With more than 120 types of soups on the menu, what’s the favorite at Starfish Restaurant? The Cream of Chicken with Rice Soup, of course!
How about the namesake sub? The Starship Sub has ham, turkey, bologna, and two kinds of cheeses topped with fresh veggies loaded onto a sesame seed bun.
The most popular sub is the Crazy Club that’s piled high with hickory-smoked bacon, turkey breast, Wisconsin cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mayo. And then there is the traditional Italian sub that Starship claims would make even Michaelangelo rollover. With salami, mortadella, capicola, provolone, onion, hot giardiniera, oil and vinegar, lettuce, tomato, and oregano, we can see why!
The Starship is open Monday through Saturday from 8am to 9pm and Sunday from 11am to 6pm.
Check the website for daily soup specials. For instance, the popular Cream of Chicken with Rice is only available on Tuesdays.
The signature Starship Sub starts at about $6.50 for a mini and about $8.50 for a half. The Crazy Club Sub starts at about $7 for a mini and about $9 for a half. Soups run from about $3 to about $12 depending on the size of the soup.
Paul McKenna started Starship Subs in 1977. He and his partner Henry Laskowski had no restaurant experience, but they learned quickly. Today Starship Restaurant and Catering offers an extensive menu, a BYOB dine-in experience, and a full catering menu for special events.
The Starship lands at 7618 Madison Street in Forest Park. The restaurant is a mile walk from the Forest Park Stop on the CTA Blue Line.
