Meet us where cultures and nations blend over delicious food
The former owner of Oak Park’s famed restaurant Taste of Brasil brings you this welcoming space with a blend of cuisines from Brazil and beyond.
Mulata Kitchen and Coffee cooks up handmade empanadas, which are savory baked pies called “Pastel Assado” in Brazil. You can try empanadas in a wide variety of flavors like mushroom, spinach, ham and cheese, beef, or hearts of palm (and more!)
You can also try a homemade Brazilian cheese bread called Pão de Queijo. Made with tapioca flour, mozzarella, and parmesan cheese this is a gluten-free delight.
Of the many options for gourmet sandwiches, the Turkey Meltdown is a crowd favorite. Made with Chihuahua cheese, bacon, smoked turkey, avocado, and housemade chimichurri sauce and pressed between slices of Mulata Kitchen’s signature rustic bread, you won’t regret trying this sandwich!
The Mulata Kitchen is open Monday through Saturday from 7am to 7pm. Sundays the restaurant is closed for the staff to spend time with family.
Empanadas at Mulata Kitchen are between $4 and $4.50 each. A basket of six slices of Pão de Queijo is $6. The Turkey Meltdown Sandwich is $10.
Mulata Kitchen Founder Cristiane Pereira seeks to build a welcoming space for the diverse community of Oak Park. She serves gourmet sandwiches, empanadas, and customized blends of coffee from various regions of Brazil.
Pereira is a proud Brazilian Mulata, which she knows is a descriptor that carries some negative connotations in the United States. But she says the word has a very different meaning in Latin culture, defining the word “mulata” as a “beautiful, unique, and exotic blend of people, cultures, nations, ethnicities, and languages.”
Pereira does not intend to make a political statement. Rather she intends to create a welcoming place to enjoy an empanada and a coffee. She will welcome you to do just that when you stop by Mulata Kitchen and Coffee in Oak Park.
Located at 136 North Oak Park Avenue, Mulata Kitchen is near all the major Oak Park attractions like the Unity Temple designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and the Ernest Hemingway Birthplace Museum. The restaurant is just a two-minute walk from the Oak Park Stop on the CTA Green Line and a 10-minute walk from the Oak Park Stop on the Union Pacific West Metra Line.
