Meet us where Italian is served with a twist
At this family-owned business in La Grange Park, traditional Italian food gets a delightful twist.
For instance, the Mattone Restaurant and Bar’s Beef & Hot G takes the traditional Italian beef sandwich with giardiniera and turns it into a wood-fired pizza with, you guessed it, Italian beef and hot giardiniera on top of tomato sauce and mozzarella.
The wood-fired oven gets put to good use, firing both pizzas and special sandwiches that change with the seasons.
Our favorite is The Benny, a wood-fired sandwich with ham, salami, prosciutto, mozzarella, lettuce, tomato, and mayo. But the wood-fired Neapolitan Steak Sandwich with grilled rib eye, peppers, onions, and provolone is hard to pass up!
Of course, if you’re looking for something simple and traditional, you can’t go wrong with Mattone’s take on classic dishes like Carbonara and Lasagna.
Mattone Restaurant is open Sunday through Thursday from 4pm to 9pm and Friday and Saturday from 4pm to 10pm.
Starters range from about $11 to about $15, while a plate of pasta ranges from about $18 to $23.5 for Shrimp Pesto with sauteed shrimp, cherry tomatoes, and pesto cream sauce tossed with linguini.
Entrees range from about $15 to $30. Wood-fired pizzas start at $12 and wood-fired sandwiches are about $15.
Co-owners and brothers Franco and Vito Francese took over the family business from their father in 2013, changing the name of the restaurant from D’s Little Italy to Mattone.
It’s a fitting name for a restaurant with a brick oven centerpiece. Mattone means “brick,” in Italian.
If you come by Mattone, you will likely see Franco who feels at home in the restaurant industry. He started working in the family business at the age of 11 after all!
Just a 20-minute drive west of downtown Chicago, Mattone Restaurant and Bar is located at 9 East 31st Street in La Grange Park near the Brookfield Zoo.
