Meet us where the fruit is forward
If you’re lucky enough to pass a La Michoacana paleteria, don’t hesitate. Pull over and get yourself a fruit-forward Mexican dessert!
The Paleteria La Michoacana experience is an ice-cream stand and popsicle shop with delicious fresh-fruit popsicles and more.
It all started in the 1940s in Tocumbo, a town in Michoacán where Mexican sugarcane grows in abundance. The paleteria - ice cream stand - first popped up in Tocumbo, serving frozen dessert made of fresh fruit on a stick. In no time, the popular paleta - fruit popsicle - and the paleteria experience could be found on roadsides and in parks across Mexico.
Soon enough, the paleteria made an appearance in California and, from there, throughout the United States.
Lucky for anyone visiting Berwyn, there is an authentic Paleteria La Michoacana where paletas are served in a jaw-dropping number of flavors.
Paletas de Crema (cream popsicles) come in flavors like Oreo and fruity pebbles. Paletas de Agua (water-fruit popsicles) come in flavors like mango and kiwi. There is also an array of ice cream flavors like cheesecake or cappuccino.
Don’t worry, there are traditional flavors like chocolate as well. But you can also get a little wild and try a snow cone flavored with chile powder.
The Berwyn location is open from 7am to midnight every day of the week. There is usually an after-dinner rush for paletas, so expect a line if you go in the early evening.
Paletas de Crema and Paletas de Agua are about $3. Expect to pay up to $7 for frozen yogurt or a banana split.
The menu can be a little overwhelming at La Michoacana with descriptions in Spanish, but the friendly staff will help you understand your options.
Located at 6533 Cermak Road in Berwyn, this La Michoacana Paleteria is a 20-minute drive west of downtown Chicago.
