At La Maison de Bonbon, the same 100-year-old copper pot has turned out the same silky, smooth original French crème since 1921.
It all started when the Stejr family came from Germany to Madison Street in Forest Park, bringing with them the old-world chocolate recipes that would make the family famous along a stretch of road where chocolatiers seem to gather.
The family opened a little storefront and filled the counter with small-batch, hand-crafted Original French Crèmes, Vanilla Butter Cremes, Pecan Turtles, and Peanut Butter Cups.
The store ownership has passed hands from family to family many times, but the recipes, the old copper pot, and the tiny storefront with big flavors have remained the same for more than 100 years of deliciousness.
Here you will find hand-dipped French Crèmes, Salted Caramels, Marshmallow Butter Cups, Almond Toffee, and so much more. All of the chocolate and candy are handmade with the finest ingredients in small batches just as it was made a century ago.

La Maison de Bonbon is open Sunday through Thursday from noon to 7pm and Friday and Saturday from 11am to 7pm. The candy store is closed on Monday.
Today, at La Maison de Bonbon you may find Store Manager Esthela Gonzalez selling the same melt-in-your-mouth chocolates that have delighted customers here for a century.
Gonzalez understands the important tradition that the La Maison de Bonbon chocolate recipes hold. These same recipes crossed the pond more than 100 years ago to make their way into this welcoming storefront in Forest Park.
She says that granddaughters of the original candy shop customers come into the store today to buy the chocolate treats that their grandmothers once indulged in.
Now that’s a sweet tradition.
La Maison de Bonbon is located at 7253 Madison Street in Forest Park. It is a half-mile walk from the Harlem Stop on the “L” Blue Line or less than a mile from the Harlem/Lake Stop on the Green Line.
