At the Happy Apple Pie Shop, the employees laugh together so that your family can feast together. One of the secret ingredients here is happy employees.
The Happy Apple is a “blended work environment” where people with and without developmental disabilities create handcrafted pies together.
And baking those handmade pies can be hard work. The Happy Apple team peels more than 150 pounds of apples per week!
Those peels don’t go to waste, though. They are given to the Glen Art Farm in Chicago where the goats eat the peels. In turn, The Happy Apple gets goat milk from the farm to make the cheese for quiches and hand-pies. Win-win!
This type of win-win relationship with community partners is exactly what the Happy Apple is all about. Ingredients are locally sourced where possible. The fruit comes from the Ellis Family Farm in Benton Harbor, Michigan.
The Happy Apple Pie Shop makes three seasonal pies every week as well as savory pot pies and quiches. Though this pie shop is an “apple-first” kind of place, the peach pie is a particular favorite for customers and staff alike.

The Happy Apple is open Tuesday through Friday from 11:30am to 6pm and Saturday from 11:30am to 5pm. (Closed Sunday and Monday.)
Make sure to come early, the pies sell out daily and when they’re gone…they’re gone!

The Happy Apple is a personal business for Michelle Mascaro and Corynne Romine.
Their family includes three children, one of whom has an intellectual disability. Acutely aware that their daughter may have a hard time finding employment, they set out to build a business where she - and other people with intellectual and developmental disabilities - can find work in a happy and safe environment.
Located at 226 Harrison Street, the Happy Apple Pie Shop is just 0.2 miles from the Austin Stop on the “L” Blue Line.
