Meet us where a love of coffee runs in the family
Great Sip Café is one of those neighborhood coffee shops where you will find the owners laughing over a shared pot of coffee.
A lifetime lover of coffee, Owner Rosa Cruz went in search of the smooth coffee that she first drank as a child cultivating coffee with her grandmother in the Dominican Republic. She found that in the Bassline Espresso of Chicago’s Passion House Coffee Roasters, which is served at the café.
Cruz opened Great Sip Café with her daughter and the whole family is intimately involved with the business. Together, this mother-daughter duo creates delicious coffee drinks and small bites with Latin-infused flavor.
The Brown Sugar Latte is a huge hit at Great Sip Café, but you can try a Strawberry Frappe or an Organic Loose Leaf Tea. Small bites are also available like the Jamon Punta Cana Sandwich and Dominican Empanadas (weekends only).
The café is a place where the work of local artisans is celebrated and there is a focus on Latina-made products and Latin-owned roasters.
Great Sip Café is open Wednesday through Monday from 7am to 2pm. (Closed Tuesday.) Dominican Empanadas are available on Saturday and Sunday.
Lattes start at $3 and snacks start at just $2. A Jamon Punta Cana Sandwich is about $6 and the Dominican Empanadas are $3.
Rosa Cruz learned to cultivate coffee as a child, tending to her grandmother’s coffee plants in the Dominican Republic. There she would harvest the berries, extract the beans, and dry the beans in the sun.
This early introduction to coffee cultivation also cultivated a love for coffee drinking in the young Cruz. She began brewing a dream of owning a coffee shop, which became a reality when she opened Great Sip Café alongside her daughter, Diana De La Cruz.
Located at 818 Oak Park Avenue, Great Sip Café is just steps from the Oak Park Stop on the CTA Blue Line.
