Firecakes Craft Donuts

104 North Maple Avenue
Oak Park, IL 60301

Meet us where the donuts are baked with a secret family recipe

The freshly baked “firecakes” on sale at Firecakes Craft Donuts are based on a secret family recipe that traces its roots to the logging camps of Northern Wisconsin where dough was fried over an open fire to sustain long days of work.

Today, the baked goods sold at Firecakes are made from locally sourced, unique ingredients to create classic donuts and seasonal delicacies.

Try the Wildflower Honey Glazed Donut or the Tahitian Vanilla Iced Donut. We also love the seasonal selections like the Apple Cider Donut or Hibiscus Glazed Brioche.

Karen and Jonathan Fox are the proprietors behind Firecakes Craft Donuts. It was a longtime dream for this couple to open a donut shop in honor of Karen’s grandfather, William “Billy” Hobbs, who was a baker in the 1930s logging camps of Wisconsin.

Sometimes in the frigid cold and always with limited resources, Billy created delicious baked goods that sustained the workers during long and laborious days. His famed “firecakes” were created when Billy started frying dough in a cast-iron pot over an open fire and sprinkling just a little bit of sugar over his warm creations.

The full firecakes recipe is a closely guarded family secret, but you can view the original, round dough cutter that Billy used. It’s displayed at the Firecakes Hubbard Street location in Chicago.

For Karen and Jonathan, their donut shop is both an homage to Billy and a dream come true. Firecakes now has four locations and a food truck (“Billy the Food Truck,” of course!) in the Chicagoland area.
