Meet us where the baked goods are bountiful
This sister-owned bakery and cafe is an homage to the timeless delis of Europe and the old-school bakeries of Chicago.
The charming space fosters a sense of community in the neighborhood and offers a delicious stop for visitors strolling among the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed homes lining Chicago Avenue.
Rotating cakes sold by the slice at Broken Tart include flavors like olive oil, ricotta chip, and carrot. Sweet cornbread biscuits and sweet scones are baked daily alongside savory cornbread biscuits and savory scones.
Specialty sandwiches are changed on the rotating menu weekly, but you might discover an Italian Sandwich with provolone, ham, Genoa salami, mortadella, romesco sauce, and olive salad on homemade focaccia or a Veg Sandwich with burrata, Roma tomatoes, and arugula, mixed with roasted red pepper aioli, arugula pesto, and aged balsamic atop homemade focaccia.
The salads of the week also rotate, but a favorite is the Kale White Bean Salad with Tuscan kale, white beans, and avocado with a tahini-gold dressing.
Broken Tart is open Tuesday through Saturday from 8am to 3pm and 8am to 1pm on Sunday. (Closed Monday.)
Sisters Kristina and Katie Mack are the owners of Broken Tart. The bakery and deli began when Kristina started making special-order baked goods for sale online.
Soon the sisters started to dream of a brick-and-mortar bake shop that would feel like a neighborhood gathering place. And that’s how Broken Tart got its start!
Broken Tart is located at 1108 Chicago Avenue. The bakery and cafe is just over a half-mile walk from both the Oak Park Stop on the Union Pacific West Railway and the Harlem/Lake Stop on the CTA Green Line.
Broken Tart is just steps from the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio, making it the perfect stop during a day of sightseeing.
