Meet us where the cookies cause blackouts from the deliciousness
When Shana Taveras moved to London with her husband, she loved exploring the city streets and trying the bakeries, but she noticed that the “American” cookies sold across the pond tend to be jumbo-sized and stuffed with candies.
She started making bite-sized morsels that better reflect America like a chocolate-on-chocolate-on-chocolate cookie based on the Brooklyn Blackout Cake that would eventually give Taveras the inspiration behind the name for her bakeshop.
Blackout Baking Co. was born when Taveras and her husband returned to the United States where those blackout-worthy cookies now entice from behind the counter at a brick-and-mortar bakeshop on Marion Street in Oak Park.
Just as the cookies at Blackout are like gourmet pieces of art, so is the beautifully designed bakery. This is due to Taveras’ background in fashion and her passion for making beautiful things.
Speaking of beautiful things, the menu at Blackout Baking Co. is filled with items that might actually inspire a blackout.
Try the Brown Butter Snickerdoodle or the Dark Chocolate Drizzle Coconut Macaroon.
And what about that chocolate-on-chocolate-on-chocolate masterpiece? The namesake Blackout Cookie is a rich chocolate ganache filled with chocolate cookie and milk-chocolate chunks topped with flaked sea salt. Yum!
All cookies at Blackout are baked preservative-free.
Blackout Baking is open every day except Tuesdays from 8am to 3:45pm. The bakeshop is closed on Tuesdays.
Large cookies are $10 and you can also the try signature cookie box with a mixture of bite-sized morsels for $11.
