Meet us where kindness is served
This beloved diner in Oak Park has served delicious breakfast and lunch options for 40 years.
The diner is known as a kind place to dine in part because of its dementia-friendly service guidelines. While employees at Al’s are kind to everyone, they are trained to be especially supportive of customers suffering from dementia.
It’s the little things that go a long way, like writing “PAID” on every receipt so that customers are reminded that they have already paid. It’s all about providing a sense of safety and comfort for guests.
In 2020, the Village of Oak Park recognized Al’s Diner as the leader in dementia-friendly service in the restaurant sector.
Al’s is open Monday through Sunday from 6am to 3pm.
The famed Al’s Skillet includes ham, sausage, bacon, onions, green peppers, and cheddar cheese with a side of toast for about $16. Take it up a notch with the Colossal Skillet with ham, bacon, mushrooms, green peppers, onions, and cheddar all topped with gravy for just over $17.
On the lunch menu, the Monte Cristo Sandwich is ham, turkey, and cheese that’s pressed and grilled between slices of French toast for about $11. The Meat Loaf Sandwich is about $8 and the Reuben is about $12.
Al’s Grill Owner Bill Loutos works alongside his son-in-law and Al’s General Manager Pete Mourtokokis. It’s a family enterprise where the aim is to create an environment where customers feel a part of the family.
Situated on the corner of Madison Street and Wisconsin Avenue, Al’s is just one block east of Harlem Avenue in Oak Park at 1100 Madison Street. The restaurant is about a half-mile from the Harlem Stop on the Blue Line, a half-mile walk from the Harlem/Lake Stop on the CTA Green Line, and a half-mile walk from the Oak Park Stop on the Union Pacific West Railway.
