Meet us where the corned beef is piled mile-high
Aldo Conforti and Joseph Gapatione were boyhood friends who grew up together in Chicago’s Italian neighborhood around Halsted and Kedzie. Al was an elevator operator and Joe was a bricklayer in 1960 when the friends decided to take a risk together and open a small grocery store.
It was meant to be a corner store, but that all changed one hot summer afternoon when Al made himself a sandwich on fresh Gonnella bread and sat down outside to eat. A truck driver pulled up and asked for the same sandwich and Al and Joe’s Deli was born along with one of Chicagoland’s best sandwiches.
Featured on Chicago’s Best, the Mile-High Hot Corned Beef is a sandwich worth traveling for. Piled high with corned beef, yellow mustard, Swiss cheese, and horseradish sauce served on rye bread with a half pickle, this Al and Joe’s classic does not disappoint!
You can also order a variety of specialty sandwiches, including the Original Italian Sub with mortadella, capicola, genoa salami, provolone cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes.
Al and Joe’s is open Monday through Saturday from 7am to 10pm and Sunday from 8am to 4pm.
Make sure to check the daily specials board!
The Mile-High Hot Corned Beef is $14. An Original Italian Sub is about $7 for a small and $11 for a large.
