Meet us where art is in progress
Every week is different at the Calypso Moon Studio in the Oak Park Arts District. The studio showcases the work-in-progress of two self-described “messy, globe-trotting, anthropology-trained” women.
Author and painter Sallie Wolf is obsessed with observing the moon, so you will find charts, drawings, paintings, and musical works dedicated to her “Moon Project,” which is less about the moon itself and more about Wolf’s relationship with the moon.
Writer and story gatherer M.G. Bertulfo creates at the intersection between nature, culture, and spirituality. On her desk, you might find the beginning notes for a beautiful plot between the candles and the leather-bound notebooks!
Every week is a different week at the Calypso Moon Studio! Stop in on your stroll through the Oak Park Arts District to see if the artists are in residence or set up an appointment by calling 708-317-8253.
The third Friday of the month is a great time to check out all of the galleries in the Arts District during the Third Friday Gallery Walk.
Sallie Wolf describes herself as an observer. The primary object of her observations is the moon, which she has closely watched and sketched since November 30, 1994. Her sketches, drawings, and paintings of the moon are based on the tradition of the Renaissance when drawing was a way to explore the world.
Exploring the world is another of Wolf’s passions. She and her husband are traveling as “quickly and thoroughly as possible” through the world - all while Wolf observes and translates what she sees into books, paintings, music, and more.
Mary Grace Bertulfo is an award-winning writer and poet whose work is featured in conservation magazines such as Sierra and Chicago Wilderness and in anthologies such as Growing Up Filipino II and Our Own Voice.
Bertulfo also founded Banyan, an Asian American Writers Collective, whose mission is to amplify Asian American voices.
Located on 331B Harrison Street in the Oak Park Arts District, the Calypso Moon Studio is an easy walk from the Jackson stop on the CTA Blue Line or a 15-minute drive west of Chicago.
